Rwanda Experience:

Conflict Transformation and Peace in Education

This program focuses on the following component of happiness: Belonging.

GEA is taking interested educators to East Africa. Educators participating in these experiences will have the opportunity to participate in unique educational experiences involving our East African partners in Rwanda and Uganda.

Guests and educators will participate in the main program in Rwanda, receiving conflict transformation training and observing how the country has transformed since 1994. Participants may also add on additional experiences, including a project-based immersion experience in Uganda and a culture and safari experience, also in Uganda.

DATES

PROGRAM DETAILS

Receive conflict transformation training alongside Rwandan educators from conflict experts that will help participants both in their role as educator as well as in life. After conflict training, participate in a teacher workshop where educator teams from three continents will translate the concepts into modules that can be taught to K-12 students and adult learners.

Visit local schools and organizations and hear first-hand experiences to investigate the narrative of conflict and study the measures taken to return this country to calm. Participants will identify applications that can be transferred to their own classroom that may relate to anti-bullying efforts and other ways of promoting peace within schools.

Learn about the history, culture and environment of Rwanda, including a visit and briefing at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre and the amazing transformation this country has experienced since 1994.

Uganda Experience:

Immersion program & safari

This program focuses on the following aspect of happiness: Fun!

Educators will get to experience what a focus on music and dance looks like on the school level, and will get to have conversations around the idea of skills education. Expect to be able to work with our partners in various roles.

In our Immersion Program, participants will receive a wider understanding of issues in education in East Africa. Our Safari program will take participants to a once-in-a-lifetime experience at Murchison Falls, a wildlife park where participants may encounter elephants, hippos, giraffes, and even lions!

PROGRAM DETAILS

Participants have two possible post-trips to add to the program. The Uganda Immersion program will complement the Rwanda experience and give participants a wider understanding of issues in education in East Africa. Learn about the Ugandan school system and the innovative efforts by individuals and the government to answer the needs of classrooms across East Africa. The Uganda safari will take our participants to  one of the most highly regarded wildlife parks in East Africa, Murchison Falls. Murchison Falls offers a variety of scenery and wildlife experiences, including giraffes, elephants, hippopotamus and -if we're lucky- lions. The safari includes a water and land safari, and hike to the Murchison waterfall. See below here for more details on both of these add-ons.
